How this report is built

  • Each company's pattern for one quarter-end is compared with its pattern for the quarter-end before. Patterns filed mid-quarter after a capital change are never used as a comparison point, and a company that filed one between the two quarter-ends is left out.
  • Companies whose promoter group holding changed are left out of the FII, DII and MF tables: when the promoter percentage moves, the share count may have moved too, so every other percentage can change without a share changing hands.
  • Only NSE shareholding patterns are compared. BSE registers are often carried forward unchanged from quarter to quarter, so an unchanged BSE pattern is not read as no change.
  • A figure the filing does not carry is not disclosed, never zero, and the company is left out of that table.
  • Tables cover current Nifty Total Market constituents (about 750 companies), so that very small companies do not fill them.
  • Changes are in filed percentage points of the company's shares. They say how the holding moved, not why.

FII tables, company count

  • 7 excluded: BSE pattern on either side
  • 10 excluded: an event pattern filed between the two quarter-ends
  • 215 excluded: not a Nifty Total Market constituent
  • 32 excluded: promoter group holding changed
  • 3 excluded: FII below 1% in both quarters
  • 72 ranked + 267 excluded = 339 companies with both quarter-end patterns

Frequently asked questions

When do Indian companies file their quarterly shareholding pattern?

Under SEBI LODR Regulation 31(1)(b), a listed company files its shareholding pattern within 21 days of the end of each quarter, so patterns for the quarter ended 30 September land between 1 and 21 October. Companies also file a pattern within days of a capital restructuring; this report never uses those mid-quarter patterns as a comparison point.

What do the FII, DII, MF and promoter figures mean?

Each is the percentage of the company's shares held by that category on the quarter-end date, as filed: FII is foreign portfolio investors, DII is domestic institutions, MF is mutual funds (part of DII), and promoter is the promoter and promoter group total. A change is the difference in filed percentage points between two quarter-ends. It says how the holding moved, not why, and it is not investment advice.

Why is a company missing from a table?

Tables cover current Nifty Total Market constituents that filed NSE patterns for both quarter-ends. A company is left out when its promoter group holding changed (the share count may have moved), when it filed a mid-quarter pattern between the two quarter-ends, when a figure is not disclosed in either pattern, or when the category is under 1% in both quarters. The method block on this page counts every exclusion.
